Instead of working full-time (jobs are hard to find), Ryan decided to go to school and get his Emergency Medical Technician certificate. He finished the class and took the test and is now a National Registered EMT. At the same time, he began volunteering at the Palmer Lake Fire Department. It was quite a sacrifice for him, as he spent many days and nights at the station. He would assist on the medical calls while still taking the class. After being certified, he was able to do those calls. It was something he really enjoyed. They offered to pay for him to go to fire school, but his mission was more important. In this occupation, you start out as a "white" shirt which is really a probationary time (over 3 months to be exact). Right before he left , he was sworn in as an official volunteer. He will pick up his duties when he returns.
On the day he was sworn in, he was given his official clothing and they gave him a farewell party. He really enjoyed working with the other fire fighters!!
