July 2012, Waldo Canyon Fire

I debated whether to add this to my blog or not.  Since this is a family journal and this made an huge impact on us, I decided to include it.  July 23rd as Chris was on his way home from Aaron's Camp, they noticed smoke in the area of Waldo Canyon.  They didn't think much of it.  Shortly thereafter, many areas began to be evacuated...including Garden of the Gods.  We all thought it would be under control in a relatively short amount of time, however, due to extreme dryness...the fire spread.  We were riveted to the TV, as scenes were constantly being shown.  We could see smoke from our house.  It seemed as though things were beginning to be controlled.   On the 26th, things went from bad to worse...the conditions were ripe!  The wind shifted.  The smoke came towards our home...very thick!  It seemed as though the sky were orange.  It was hard to see even across the street.  The TV was announcing that several neighborhood should be evacuated.  We watched in horror as some of the smoke cleared and we saw the fire go over the ridge and down into the homes on the other side.  It was surreal!  Something I will never forget.  That evening, we stood outside with our neighbors and watched the hillside burn, praying for those families who would lose everything.  We along with the whole city of Colorado Springs are so grateful to all the fire fighters who risked their lives to contain the fire!

347 homes destroyed.  32,000 people evacuated.  18,000 acres burned.  2 deaths.

GRADUATION May 17, 2012

Ryan graduated from Liberty High School on May 17, 2012.  The ceremony was held at the Air Force Academy.  Afterwards, we had a barbecue celebrating at our home.  It is hard to believe that another child has finished school.   He decided to go to school at Pikes Peak Community College to obtain his Emergency Medical Technician certificate.  That started May 29, 2012....it didn't give him much of a break.

 Sitting and listening to speakers.
 Showing off his diploma.

Showing off on "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (so named by Chris when he was a small boy)

 Proud parents of the graduate!

PROM 2012

Chris picking up his date, Jordan.
Ryan picking up his date, Erin.

 Let the pictures begin :)

Julie came over to the house and set up an area in our basement for the next set of pictures.

Lucky for the boys, Brother Murdock lent them his car.  I guess it is quite impressive....

Gotta look through the sunroof!
Dinner was served at our house, with Tim and Jessica Powell as the waiters.
The deck was beautified and set for the 2 couples.

After filling their tummies full, they went off to the prom and had a GREAT time!

PROM 2012--The Asking

This year Ryan asked his date (Erin) by making a bunch of paper cranes ( almost 500 of them)  and putting them all over her room.  The question was actually in a paper flower that was placed on her bed...The following picture shows the mess he made of her room.  Wonder how long it took her to clean them all up and find them all!?!

Erin's reply was a text telling him she would be happy to go.

Chris was a sophomore this year, so technically he was not supposed to go to prom unless an upperclassman asked....Well, she asked!  She hid Easter Eggs ALL OVER the house.  Each egg either had a word, a piece of candy, or a green alien in it.  (We were still finding eggs a few months later!)

Chris answered by throwing her a football that said "I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to go to prom with you".
